The Barrel Making Process

Our maturation port/spirit kegs and barrels are made from recycled American Oak red wine barrels. Each keg is handcrafted in our cooperage in the Barossa Valley - Williamstown SA.

Check out how the boys at Tubbies craft each keg ready for you to mature your own port or whiskey blend in.

Step 1

Oak Staves are selected from recycled wine barrels before they are cut to the correct length and width. The staves are then jointed ready to start raising the keg.

Step 3

Once the raising of the keg is complete it needs to be levelled out. This is done first by ensuring it is vertically straight with a 90 degree ruler. A hammer is then used to level out each stake before using one of the machines in the cooperage to finish this step.

Step 5

The head of the keg is jointed to 90 degrees. During this time, the arris of the keg is measured to ensure the head will fit. Linseed meal is then added into the arris before the head is hammered in and driving work hoops on to secure head in keg.
